Gardening Season Has Arrived! How to Save on Water in London, Ontario

Mindy Small

London, Ontario is known for its beautiful, natural surroundings.

Surrounded by beautiful Ontario farmland, London is one of the best cities for homeowners to enjoy a backyard garden of their own. Whether you have a large or small lot size, a garden is a great perk to home ownership. When I’m not busy getting great mortgage deals for our clients, I love spending time in my garden. From the first ripe strawberry to the abundance of the fall harvest, I find that one of the best rewards of owning your own home is getting to enjoy the outdoor space.

Gardening isn't for everyone, but even if you simply enjoy putting on the sprinkler every now and then to keep your lawn looking its best, it’s starting to get to be that time of the season when people start talking about water usage. The City of London, Ontario has a lawn and garden water use system based on whether your home has an odd or even number, and let’s just say that it’s a good idea to keep that in mind to avoid getting the stink eye from your neighbours!

In addition to keeping the peace by checking what day you can turn on the water hose, London, Ontario offers up a few tips on water conservation. Here are a few other simple things that I find to help save on those water bills when my garden plants are getting scorched by the summer heat:

  • Watering in the morning means that your plants can get all the hydration they need before they really need it and reducing the evaporation that happens midday, not to mention the possibility of causing damage to sensitive plants
  • Sidewalks and driveways don’t need watering...just something to keep in mind when setting up the sprinklers :)
  • Excess water run-off can be avoided by using a low-flow hose or sprinkler setting. It takes more time, but is a simple way to reduce water usage.

When owning a house, the bills can really add up, and when you’re wondering how much house you can afford, you’re not usually thinking about the cost of watering the garden! We work hard to lower the cost of your mortgage, so you can enjoy the great outdoors all summer long without worrying about those water bills, but sometimes a little common sense when watering your garden and your lawn goes a long way and will help ease the cost of home ownership during the hot summer months here in London, Ontario.
